A Critical Analysis of “Renovated” by Jim Wilder

This book may be
the worst misrepresentation
of Dallas Willard’s work ever published.

=== Caution Required ===

This book has two contributions that are noteworthy. First, it gives us the transcripts of Dallas’ presentations at the 2012 “Heart and Soul” Conference (see chapters 2,4,6,8). Second, it offers heavy emphasis on the value and importance of building a deep attachment / love-bond with God.

Beyond that, however, Wilder’s premises and reasoning are deeply flawed. This book seriously misrepresents Dallas’ perspective on spiritual formation, contains vast overstatements, and is self-contradictory in several ways.

Consequently, readers who are only moderately familiar with Dallas’ writings will have difficulty identifying the manner in which his views have been consistently misrepresented, and thus come to the conclusion that Dallas’ presentation of spiritual formation was in need of Wilder’s “corrections.”

The truth is … Wilder has so terribly misrepresented Dallas’ perspectives that it would take another book to unravel its distortions and its overall illogical approach to sound principles of spiritual development. But in the interests of clarity, we have summarized a few of its biggest problems on this site.
