Mistaken Approach to Attachment

We all agree that attachment and bonding are fundamental to life and to how our brain functions. Proponents of spiritual formation throughout history have all taught the importance of building a meaningful, whole-person, interactive relationship with God.

But Wilder fails to take the history of spiritual formation into account, and instead makes several unsupported claims about attachment and its relationship to spiritual formation. In the process he significantly distorts the nature of spiritual practices as well as the nature and impact of the implict beliefs we hold in regard to God and spiritual development.

We offer the following correctives:

  1. Brain Science Did NOT Discover the Centrality of Attachment
  2. We Cannot BEGIN with Attachment as Our Starting Point
  3. We Cannot PRIORITIZE Attachment and Belief
